At only 0.7 square kilometres, Chippendale is small in size but full of life. Nestled between Broadway, Cleveland Street, Central railway station and the University of Sydney, it is characterised by historic workers’ cottages, terraces and warehouse conversions.
As you’d expect with Sydney University and the University of Technology close by, Chippendale is home to a bustling student population. It also boasts a colourful mix of ethnicities – Chinese, English, New Zealand, South Korean, Indonesian and Australian-born all making up the palette.
Of historic interest is Regent Street railway station, also known as the ‘Mortuary Station’, as well as a number of very popular cafes and pubs, including The Rose, which is usually packed to the rafters on a Friday night.
