Street names such as Ivy, Vine, Rose, Pine and Myrtle hint at the origin of Darlington in Sydney’s inner west. Botanist William Shepherd cultivated a nursery on the site, which he named Darling Nursery in honour of Governor Ralph Darling.
Darlington is a university town, and in fact half the suburb is made up of the campus of Sydney University. Many of the areas’ historic highlights, like the old town square and the church, are now part of its grounds, and a quarter of the suburb’s residents are students.
Darlington is a multifaceted area, with pockets of green and small bohemian cafes tucked away in its back streets. Saturday food market offers organic produce and homemade goods. Within walking distance of Redfern and Central railway stations, it’s also home to CarriageWorks (the former Eveleigh Railway Yard), where the contemporary arts are loved and nurtured.
