      Paddington

      Eastern Suburbs

We love being the envy of Sydney

Paddington, or ‘Paddo’ for short, is well known and envied as a bustling, cosmopolitan part of Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Trendy Oxford Street runs right through the centre of town, and the place is famous for its boutique fashion stores, cafés and restaurants.

The district's first cottages were built around Victoria Barracks, formerly a major army base. In the latter part of the 19th century, many terrace houses were built to house the city's burgeoning working population. Over time, these houses filled up almost every parcel of land, and the suburb suffered from overpopulation. Strangely enough, Paddington was once an unfashionable town, but all that changed in the 1960s as gentrification took hold.

Today the suburb attracts a large number of professionals, and the median household income is more than twice the national average. People come from all over Sydney for the open-air markets every Saturday, and Five Ways, a popular intersection in the backstreets of Paddington, with an ultra-chic selection of cafes and bars.
