Redfern has been going upmarket over the last few years. But as high-rise apartment blocks and gentrification change the look of the place, there’s still a strong sense of community spirit which has existed since the birth of the suburb, when surgeon William Redfern took a land grant in 1817 from Governor Lachlan Macquarie.
Redfern is perhaps most famous for the South Sydney football team, Australian Rugby League’s most successful club. Their historic home, Redfern Oval, is being redeveloped as we speak, with a huge amount of community support.
Close to the city, Surry Hills and convenient to almost everything, Redfern is becoming more and more popular with young professionals. With a mix of terraces as well as contemporary apartments, the suburb is becoming one of Sydney’s most rapidly changing places to live.
