From a thriving residential area to industrial suburb and back again, Ultimo has seen a great deal of change over the years. In 1978 the residential population of Ultimo (and neighbouring Pyrmont) was just a tiny 1,800, but these days it’s been well and truly gentrified, a suburb typified by chic apartments.
Ultimo is a surprisingly multicultural area, and only 21% of its residents were born in Australia. Students and young professionals make up much of the population, many of whom come from Asia.
There are many places of interest in Ultimo. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has its radio and television studios on Harris Street, which is also the home of Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. Wentworth Park, a multi-purpose sporting facility, gives residents plenty of green, open space. Thousands of students attend The University of Technology, the Sydney Institute of TAFE and the International Grammar School. Broadway Shopping Centre is situated in the original flagship building of the Grace Brothers department store chain.
